Article THE STRUCTURE OF MAHALLA AND ITS ROLE FOR HOUSING IN HISTORICAL CITIES OF IRAN

Abstract The offered paper is dedicated to the features and specific of New towns concept (mahalla) based on international experience and on Iran examples. Positive features and negative effects of the concept are defined.

From author point of view it is rather actual, as currently there is a significant focus on extensive growth of housing in Iran. The current house building rate causes the whole towns being laid down. So today it is quite important to accumulate the information on New Towns construction experience in the way that will afford to acknowledge positive outcomes and to avoid negative effects of New Towns concept in the future.

Researches and practical examples of the New Towns in Iran are put in a basis. There are some articles of Iranian authors in the list of literature that confirms the significant role of New Towns concept in housing development in Iran.
