Article The triumph of Christianity and the polymorphism of Christ on the western facade of St. George's Cathedral in Yuriev-Polsky
Authors Kartashov S.A., Kartashova A.A., Morozov M.R.,  Moscow Architectural Institute (State Academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract This article attempts to decipher the iconographic program of the reliefs of St. George's Cathedral in Yuriev-Polsky through an analysis of the context, or conditions, in which this remarkable masterpiece of Russian architecture was created. The authors view this program as a reflection of large-scale socio-political and religious processes, as well as the personal context during the formation of ancient Russian statehood. A version of this program is proposed for the main, western facade of the cathedral, demonstrating its continuity with fresco cycles of Pskov and Novgorod, with an emphasis on the polymorphic image of Christ. The central idea of this iconography is the triumph of Christianity. It is suggested that the compositional solution of the western facade anticipates features of such a specifically Russian phenomenon as the multi-tiered iconostasis.
