Article Historical fundamentals and Cubist principles in avant-garde architecture
Authors Musatova A.A.
Moscow Architectural Institute (State Academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract The article reveals the interrelationship between Cubist painting and subsequent artistic movements (Suprematism, Purism) with avant-garde architecture. In the pictorial works, theoretical treatises, and manifestos of Cubism, an engagement with historical heritage is noted. Archaic images are transformed using Cubist techniques. Tendencies to use historical prototypes are also traced in various directions of avant-garde architecture. Elements and details borrowed from historical styles such as Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassicism, and vernacular wooden architecture are modified and become the basis for innovative form-generation in architecture. A conclusion is formulated regarding the significant role of historical heritage and the pictorial principles of Cubism in the formation of avant-garde architecture.
